Lemongrass (Cymbopogon) originated in Southeast Asia and India. There are several varieties depending on the place of origin. The variety of Lemongrass we have in Guyana and the Caribbean is from Southeast Asia.
Lemongrass is a perennial. It grows long, flat reedy leaves and occasionally will have butterfly-like flowers. The leaves tend to be sharp and can cut your skin, similar to paper cuts. This plant can also be grown in pots, but you will need large pots as it is an herb that spreads and can grow tall. You should also leave the pots outside as it thrives in full sun but be sure to place them where they are protected from high winds.
