Former national boxer Gladwin Dorway remains hospitalised in a critical condition after being stabbed during a confrontation at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara on Sunday night and his attacker has since been arrested.

Dorway, popularly known as ‘Tiger,’ 31, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, is currently nursing a single stab wound to his chest. He has been admitted as a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he underwent surgery yesterday morning. His condition is said to be critical.

The stabbing occurred around 9 pm Sunday at Graham Street, Plaisance, one street away from Dorway’s house.

Stabroek News was informed that the suspect, who is known as Otis, was arrested yesterday morning in the area.

Dorway’s aunt, Sybil Dorway, yesterday explained to this newspaper that the suspect was among a group of four men who visited her home prior to the attack and allegedly threatened her great nephew.

“When he [Otis] came to the house, he and three more ah them come to the fence. I was under the house sitting down. One ah them pull the said knife that juk Gladwin last night [Sunday], one ah them pull the knife pun the boy [her great nephew] neck, pun the road and tell he ‘Mind yuh (expletive)  business.’ So, I don’t know wah happen after but they come to me and seh ‘Aunty, I come fah cuss out this bai hay’ and ‘he must keep out ah people (expletive)  business. I went to jail already. I could murder anybody.’ And they start to carry on,” Sybil related.

At the time, Sybil said Gladwin was not at home.

However, upon his return, Gladwin learnt of the incident and confronted the suspect to enquire what exactly happened when he was stabbed.

“After Tiger come home now, Tiger hear the story. Tiger seh man this boy disrespectful. So Tiger go round now (to Graham Street), must be fah find out wah really happen. Tiger didn’t know he had a knife behind he back and he stab he,” Sybil said.

Meanwhile, one of Gladwin’s friends, who wished not to be named, told this newspaper that he was on Graham Street when he noticed a scuffle between Gladwin and the suspect.

The man said he later learnt that Gladwin had been stabbed and rushed to his assistance.
