A man who was found with a bag containing 266 grammes of marijuana, was on Wednesday remanded on a possession offence, after he told the court he had no knowledge of the contents of the bag he was carrying.
It was stated that on June 30, at D’Urban Street, the accused, Randy Smith, was in possession of 266 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Smith pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge, but explained to Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty that though he was given the bag containing the marijuana, he was not aware of its contents. He said when he checked the bag he did not see the narcotic.
Police prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail being granted due to the prevalence of the offence and the punishment it attracts. He then emphasised to the court that the cannabis was found on Smith.
Prosecutor Blackman informed the magistrate that Smith was riding a bicycle when he was stopped by police officers, searched and then arrested.
Smith was refused bail and the matter was adjourned until July 24.
