Whenever the calendar flips to July, the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) stages its annual ‘Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis National Novices Championships.
This year it will be no different.
Starting tonight, the three-night event will be staged at the National Gymnasium.
Some 10 gyms will battle for trophies and medals during the fixture which boxes off from 19:00hrs nightly.
According to Technical Director of the association Terrence Poole, boxers from the New Opportunity Corps, Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles, Young Achievers, Rose Hall Jammers, Essequibo Boxing Gym, the Guyana Police Force, Republican Gym, Guyana Defence Force and the Pocket Rocket Gym will compete at the local event.
Poole said yesterday that he expects in excess of 60 boxers to participate in the championships.
The GDF gym are the defending champions.
