A police officer was injur-ed late Thursday evening during the arrest of the Moruca resident who is accused of brutally chopping two of his sisters, one of whom has since succumbed.
The injured policeman has been identified as Detective Constable 22126 Clyde Hazelwood.
Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan yesterday confirmed that the suspect, Randy Cozier, who is said to be mentally unstable, was arrested around 11 pm on Thursday in the North West District community.
As the arrest was being effected, Ramlakhan said the suspect, who was armed with a cutlass, wounded Constable Hazelwood.
The injured policeman suffered a chop wound to his hand.
He was taken to the Moruca Cottage Hospital and was later transferred to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was hospitalised. His conditon is listed as stable.
The two sisters, Cynthia Cozier and Beverley France, were chopped and injured at their home on Wednesday afternoon during an argument.
The victims were rushed to Kumaka District Hospital and later transferred to Suddie Hospital.
Cynthia, 26, succumbed to her injuries around 6.30 am on Thursday.
The dead woman’s infant son, Kevin Sudeen, who was in her hand at the time of the attack, was also wounded.
Up to yesterday afternoon, France and Sudeen remained hospitalised.
A relative told Stabroek News that while Sudeen is recovering well, France is experiencing severe pain.
Stabroek News understands that the suspect became annoyed after his sister objected to him hitting a child. As a result, he armed himself with a cutlass and launched the attack before escaping.
