A labourer was yesterday granted bail after he denied stealing $250,000 in cash from a Kwakwani businesswoman.
Bob Cypriano, 20, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who read the charge to him in Georgetown.
It is alleged that between July 2nd and July 3rd, at Jonestown, Kwakwani, Upper Berbice, Cypriano stole $250,000 from Naimrajie Persaud.
He pleaded not guilty.
According to Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, on the day in question Cypriano was drinking alcohol with friends at Persaud’s business place. Sometime after, she closed the business and handed Cypriano a padlock for her door and instructed him to secure her gate with it. She then went to bed. During the night, Persaud was awakened by noise at her door and when she made checks she allegedly saw Cypriano standing at her backdoor. When asked what he was doing at her home, he reportedly pushed the door open and ran away. Persaud later made checks and discovered the money missing.
Mansfield made no objection to bail being granted and the Chief Magistrate then granted the accused $70,000 bail with the condition that he report every Friday at 8 am to the subordinate officer-in-charge of the Kwakwani Police Station.
The matter was then adjourned until July 19th, when it is expected to be called at the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court.
