A youth began a one-year prison sentence yesterday after he pleaded guilty to the theft of a motorcycle, which he claimed he was returning to its owner when he was hit by a car.
Ken Das, 20, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Georgetown, where he was read the larceny charge.
It stated that between July 1st and July 2nd, in the vicinity of Charles-town, Georgetown, he allegedly stole the motorcycle, worth $180,000, from owner Andre Haywood.
According to Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss, Haywood secured his motor vehicle on July 1st and on the next day when he went to retrieve the vehicle a security guard informed him that it had been stolen. Haywood made a report to the police.
Das was later spotted riding the motorcycle just before the accident and he was arrested afterward.
Das admitted his guilt and told Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus that he wanted to buy a horse cart but did not have money. He said on the day in question he saw the motorcycle and decided to steal it as he hoped to sell it and use the money to make the purchase. He later learnt that he knew the owner and decided to return it. However, he said he was hit by a car during his attempt and the motorcycle was badly damaged.
Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus sentenced Das to one year in prison after listening to both submissions.
Das was also charged yesterday with two counts of armed robbery. It was alleged that on June 22nd, at Lombard Street, Georgetown, Das, while armed with a cutlass, robbed Tandy Whittaker of a cell phone, valued $65,000, a handbag, valued $3,000, medication, valued $5,500 and $31,000 cash. It was also alleged that on June 27th, at Lombard Street, Georgetown, Das, while in the company of others and armed with a cutlass, robbed Tracy Reid of a cellphone, valued $18,000. Das pleaded not guilty and the proceedings were adjourned until August 2nd.
