In celebration of its 125th anniversary, a grand Family Fun Day with an after party has been organized for today at Mocha’s Community Centre Ground.
This is the East Bank Demerara community’s 5th annual production. Compared to last year’s event, residents noted, this year’s promises to be bigger and better with more novelty attractions and games. There will be a dominoes competition with a $600,000 cash prize and a peewee football competition offering a trophy and medals up for grabs.
Mocha is situated a little over two miles from the East Bank Demerara highway, between Providence and Herstelling. Somewhat isolated from the rest of the East Bank, it was in earlier times surrounded by the sugarcane fields, but through the ongoing housing development the village is becoming a bit more connected.
A former coffee plantation, Mocha was purchased by slaves after the abolition of slavery. Today the community comprises mainly working-class residents and small to medium-scale famers. There are also numerous businesses set up about the village. For the Fun Day, gates open at 2 pm and everyone is free until 10 pm. Children will be treated to an ice cream banquet. Party bags for the children come at the cost of $500 each.
The after party begins at 10 pm and with music by DJ Akelo, DJ 6IXX and Judgement Sound.
This event is sponsored by Talk Is Cheap Travel Service, GT Beer, the Ministry of Social Protection, Unique Kidz Clothing, Smirnoff Vodka and Elegant Creations.
The general public is invited to be part of the festivities.
