Rugby team fails to clinch Olympic berth

Guyana’s national men’s rugby outfit missed out on clinching a berth at the 2020 Olympic Games, ending with just a single win during their Rugby Americas North (RAN) 7s Championship campaign staged this weekend in the Cayman Islands.

Guyana, affectionately dubbed ‘The Green Machine’, went winless on day one, losing seven to 19 versus Trinidad, 12-14 against the host and seven to 42 versus Jamaica.

On Day 2, Guyana was outclassed by eventual winners, Canada 42-5 but bounced back to defeat Trinidad and Tobago 17-12 in the plate semis. However, in the plate final, the Cayman Islands defeated Guyana 21-10.

Team Guyana is scheduled to return today.

For the men’s competition, the tournament served as a regional qualification event for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020 to take place July 24 through August 9, 2020, in Tokyo, Japan.

Canada won the championship after defeating last year’s winner Jamaica, 40-5.

Mexico repeated as female champions after downing Jamaica 19-15.
