The driver of the car that was involved in Sunday’s accident on the Cullen Public Road, Essequibo Coast, which resulted in the death of Premnarine Rampersaud, was yesterday charged in the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
Thirty-two-year-old Chateram Gooray of Lot 4, Henrietta, Essequibo Coast, was arraigned before Magistrate Esther Sam. He was slapped with three traffic charges and placed on $325,000 bail.
Apart from being charged with causing the death of Rampersaud due to dangerous driving, he was charged for failing to render assistance to an injured person and driving under the influence of alcohol.
On the dangerous driving charge, Gooray was not required to plead and was granted bail in the sum of $300,000. For the charges of failing to render assistance to an injured person and driving under the influence of alcohol, he pleaded not guilty to both charges and was placed on $20,000 and $5,000 bail, respectively.
Gooray is expected to return to court on August 15.
Rampersaud, of Lot 191 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, was killed after the car he and the others were travelling in collided with a tree.
The Sunday morning accident also left Fazil Salim, 23, of Lot 26 Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast injured.
According to police, at around 7.20 am on Sunday, the trio were travelling in a gold-coloured Toyota 192 car bearing registration number HB 6973. The driver lost control while he was navigating a turn and crashed into a tree on the eastern side of the road. As a result of the collision, both Rampersaud and Salim sustained injuries. The driver, police said, immediately left the scene and reported to the Anna Regina Police Station. Police said that Rampersaud, who was in the front passenger seat, was picked up from the scene in an unconscious manner, while Salim, who was in the passenger seat behind the driver, was conscious. They were both transported to the Suddie Public Hospital.
Rampersaud, the police said, was pronounced dead on arrival at the medical facility. Salim was treated and later admitted at the said hospital. He sustained a fractured leg.
