Dear Editor,
Permit me to commend the Ministry of Education for awarding L-Dee Johnson of Ann’s Grove and who attended Clonbrook Primary School for the best composition at the 2019 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and for making public her piece at the announcement of the NGSA results. However, it is disconcerting that the principals of the Ministry of Education chose to let someone else read L-Dee’s composition. Is it that the Ministry of Education felt that L-Dee is incapable of reading her own piece? Please correct this in the future. Further, I humbly suggest that L-Dee’s piece and all other best pieces in the future be circulated to all Primary Schools in the country.
The Carnegie School of Home Economics has contributed immensely to Home Economics education in Guyana for over 75 years. Based on our present realities, the impending windfall from oil and gas and the much touted boom in all sectors of our economy, it seems opportune for the Ministry of Education to contemplate the feasibility of replicating the Carnegie School of Home Economics in Regions 2, 6 and 10. The benefits to be derived from this investment are self-evident.
The Transitional Six Year Curriculum has completed several cycles in the Education System in Guyana. It will be instructive for the Ministry of Education to conduct an evaluation of the effectiveness of this intervention, with a view to determine its merits and demerits, and where it needs to be tweaked to ensure that it delivers the desired outcomes.
Yours faithfully,
Bernel L. H. Wickham
