The Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship was officially launched yesterday during a simple but significant ceremony at the Thirst Park Sports Club.
The competition which commences at the National Cultural Centre tarmac tomorrow with eight matches, will be played over the duration of seven days.
The first two match days will feature elimination matches with the respective winners progressing to the group stage.
The final elimination night will be staged Saturday.
The overall winner will earn an automatic berth to the National Championship in August.
Winner of the event will collect $500,000 and the championship trophy, with the second, third and fourth place finisher copping $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding trophy.
The event will be staged at three venues. They are the National Cultural Centre Tarmac, Burnham Court and newcomer National Racquet Centre.
Lee Baptiste, Guinness Brand Executive thanked the teams and communities for providing the vision to continue the event, adding that each team has contributed in some way to the growth and overall success of the event.
According to Baptiste, Sponsorship partner Colours Boutique must be thanked for its contribution towards the successful staging of the event, which has certainly influenced the overall culture of the competition through the outfitting of the respective competitors in the various zones.
He challenged the respective teams and their fandoms to exhibit discipline and an overall sense of responsibility as they are ambassadors of their respective communities.
Meanwhile, Creana Damon, Colours Boutique Representative stated that the company is proud once again to be associated with the tournament, adding that the entity is very supportive of the Guinness brand.
She charged the players to exhibit discipline and follow the rules of the competition, while wishing all participants the best of luck as they pursue the coveted title.
Tournament coordinator and Director of Three Peat Promotions Rawle Welch, declared that the entity is honored to be a part of the journey in developing a product that has become a local phenomenon, noting that he envisions and anticipates a highly supported and enthralling contest.
To date Beacons [Bartica Champion], Melanie-B [East Coast Demerara winner], Brothers United [West Demerara/East Bank Demerara winner], Trafalgar [Berbice champion] and High Rollers [Linden champion] are the teams to have secured automatic berths to the national championship.
