Left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz is overjoyed as she moves one step closer to making her international debut after being selected for an upcoming West Indies training camp.
Schultz is the only new face from Guyana and will join her fellow natives, Sheneta Grimmond, Shabika Gajnabi and Shemaine Campbelle in Antigua from July 15 to August 10.
“It is very amazing,” the 22-year-old said, pointing out that she “feels blessed for this opportunity.”
The Craig, East Bank Demerara resident has been a consistent member of the Guyana side beginning from her stint at the under-19 level and has been constantly dedicating her time towards training, even quitting her job to focus on her cricket career.
“It means a lot to me, cricket is my life, my everything, ever since I was small I knew I wanted to play for the West Indies…this game is my happiness,” she told this publication.
Schultz added that she intends to grab the opportunity presented with both hands and was conscious of the door this camp opens.
“Every day is a learning process and I’m grateful for this chance to go and learn and I intend to learn as much as I can as fast and I can,” she said.
She explained that it is her natural passion for the game that fuels her dedication and her hunger to go out there every day and do her best while exploring new ideas and teachings.
The spinner had caught the attention of many during the staging of the Cricket West Indies’ Women’s Regional Tournament in Guyana including a number of West Indian legends who turned up just to see the young lady bowl in the nets. Assistant coach of the Guyana female team, Ryan Hercules has praised Schultz, who he described as a fast learner and willing player who always wants to improve her game.
Hercules said that after the tournament concluded, Schultz has dedicated her time to have him assist her in her training and the pair has been working on developing her skills.
