Youth gets six months for nicking money dropped near market

A youth has been sentenced to six months in jail after admitting to pocketing money someone else had dropped in the vicinity of Stabroek Market.

Daniel Wilson, 18, of 397 Fourth Bridge, Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The charge stated that on July 10th, at Lombard Street, Georgetown, he allegedly stole $24,620 from Oslyn Roberts.

His first plea to the charge was not guilty but he changed it after the prosecutor read the police’s case to the court.

Prosecutor Analisa Brumell told the court that on the day in question Wilson was identified by Roberts. According to Brumell, Roberts’ money fell and he saw Wilson pick it up and attempt to run. He was, however, apprehended by the police, who were on patrol in the vicinity of Stabroek Market at the time.

Wilson handed the money back to Roberts after he was in police’s custody.

After the prosecutor was finished addressing the court, Wilson changed his plea and told Magistrate McGusty that he was passing when he saw the money fall through the door of a bus and he picked it up and continued on his way. However, he was caught and arrested.

The magistrate subsequently sentenced the young man to six months in prison.
