Shomari Wiltshire, Abosaide Cadogan, Kirsten Gomes and Michael Alphonso are among a number of Guyanese players who secured semifinal places after recording success on the opening day of the 2019 Caribbean Area Squash Association Junior championship yesterday in Trinidad and Tobago.
Wiltshire who received a first-round bye accounted for Jamaican Sebastian Levy in the quarters 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 in their under – 17 encounter.
Samuel Ince- Carvalhal another Guyanese contesting the under-17 category, was also successful in securing one of the last-four spots after he defeated Charlie Riker of Bermuda.
Meanwhile, Cadogan and Madison Fernandes worked their way into the semis of the girls’ under – 17 category by picking up contrasting first-round wins.
Fernandes’ effort was a remarkable one after she came from two sets down to defeat Jamaican Mia Alexa Todd 5-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 while Cadogan strolled by Bajan Jahcintha Adams 11-2, 11-2, 11-1.
Success continued to come in pairs for the South Americans as Alphonso and Nicholas Verwey both reached the semis in the boys’ under – 15 category.
Alphonso who is the number two seeded player in the draw received a first-round bye after which he defeated Tobias Levy 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 in the quarters. Verwey, on the other hand, had to get by Brady Holmes in the first round – 11-3, 11-2, 11-0 – before Alex Stewart of Barbados became his second victim of the day, as he went down to the Guyanese 11-6, 11-5, 24-22.
Gomes en route to her girls’ U15 semi-final spot defeated Vincentian Nadira Morgan 11-4, 11-3, 11-0.
Louis Dasilva and Mohryan Baksh rounded out a successful day for the Guyanese by reaching the semis of the boys’ U13 category while Christian Fernandes is also well on her way after she recorded a first-round win in the girls’ U11 round-robin final.
