An Essequibo man was remanded to prison on Friday after he was accused of stealing close to $250,000 in cash.
Poonam Boodhoo, 43, of Supenaam, Essequibo was remanded after he pleaded not guilty to the charge of theft, which was read by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on July 10, at Robb Street, Bourda, Boodhoo stole a handbag valued $7,500 and $242,000 in cash, along with documents which were in the handbag, all amounting to $249,500, from Luana Brass.
Police prosecutor Annalisa Brumell told the court that Brass and Boodhoo are acquainted with each other and on the day in question, Brass was walking along Robb Street when she felt her handbag being pulled and after recognising the person who pulled the bag to be Boodhoo, she went to the Alberttown Police Station and made a report. Boodhoo was then arrested and charged.
She informed the court that files in the matter are still incomplete but she strongly objected to Boodhoo being granted bail given the nature of the offence and the penalty it attracts.
Boodhoo told the court that he is a porter and would never steal from Brass, especially on a busy street like Robb Street.
Magistrate McGusty remanded Boodhoo to prison and adjourned the matter until August 2.
