Dear Editor,
I noted your page one comment in yesterday’s edition of Stabroek News which quoted Article 106 (6) “The Cabinet including the President shall resign if the Government is defeated by the vote of a majority of all elected members of the National Assembly on a vote of confidence”.
However, what do you make of Article 106 (7) which then states:
“Notwithstanding its defeat, the Government shall remain in office and shall hold an election within 3 months, or such longer period as the National Assembly shall by resolution supported by not less than two thirds of the votes of all the elected members of the National Assembly determine, and shall resign after the President takes the oath of office following the election”. Especially when the opposition decides to boycott the National Assembly because a vote of no confidence was passed.
Yours faithfully,
Pat Robinson Commissiong
Editor’s note: Cabinet’s resignation does not bring the government to an end. It appears that the opposition would have to be satisfactorily convinced that there is good reason to go back to Parliament to extend the timeframe for elections.
