The 30th Meeting of the Heads of CARICOM Social Security Organisations opened in Guyana yesterday.
Thirty-three delegates from several CARICOM states and other territories are attending the four-day conference, which is being hosted by Guyana’s National Insurance Scheme at the Guyana Marriott Hotel.
Speaking with Stabroek News, Mariano Brener, the Regional Coordinator for the Americas at International Social Security Association, noted the attendance of most of the CARICOM members of the Association and their desire to render assistance, support and training to those present in different aspects of social security.
Brener further noted that the issues of migration and natural disaster would be discussed during the conference in hopes of ensuring support, cooperation and planning for the future.
Education Minister Nicolette Henry delivered the feature address at the opening. Also in attendance were CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Finance Secretary Michael Joseph, Director of the Inter-American Centre for Social Security Studies Reginald Thomas, Secretary General for the International Social Security Association Marcelo Caetano, Director for the International Labour Organization Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean Claudia Coenjaerts, NIS General Manager Holly Greaves and Chairman of the NIS Board John Seeram.
