Dear Editor,
Being in receipt of a cheque drawn on an account at Republic Bank and payable to me, I recently presented it – for negotiation – to a teller of and at the Bank’s Water Street branch. In time, the teller requested of me the reason I was issued the cheque. I queried if the declaration of the source of funds for that value of instrument was imperative. The teller’s response was, “No.” I offered nothing further.
The teller, after interacting with the staff to which my transaction was referred for review/approval, approached me and again requested that I reveal the reason I was in receipt of the cheque. “I expect the bank to respect my right to privacy,” was my retort.
We both couldn’t be right. Could we?
Yours faithfully,
