In my long lifetime of playing and watching sport there has never been a day to compare with last Sunday, 14th July.
On that day the longest and one of the greatest Men’s Singles finals ever played at Wimbledon took place — at the same time just down the road at Lords as the extraordinary Final of the World Cup of Cricket between New Zealand and England was played I express my thanks to the God of Games!
Neither great encounter should have had a loser. In the tennis Federer will be haunted by those two Championship points on his service in the fifth set when very briefly he played like a mortal in an immortal match. Over at Lords I think the World Cup should have been shared. Winning on the boundaries technicality diminished a game for the ages. Gold medals for both teams for contesting a dead heat would have honoured the occasion and the game.
