The National Cultural Centre tarmac will provide the ideal battleground when the group stage round in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship kicks-off with eight slated fixtures tonight.
In the opening match, Rising Stars will oppose North East La Penitence at 19:00hrs, while Charlotte Street engages Albouystown-B at 19:30hrs and newcomer LA Ballers tackle Broad Street from 20:00hrs.
The fourth fixture will then pit tournament favourite and former champ Leopold Street against Albouystown-A from 20:30hrs, with former champion Tiger Bay matching skills with Future Stars at 21:00hrs and Gold is Money battling John Street from 21:30hrs.
In the final two matches, previous victor Back Circle will match skills with traditional contender Sophia from 22:00hrs, whilst tournament heavyweight Sparta Boss takes aim at Alexander Village from 22:30hrs.
According to an official release from the tournament coordinator Three Peat Promotions, “This year’s group stage round promises to be the most exciting and competitive in recent memory, as several high-profile teams are pitted against each other. Most of the matches can be considered dream matchups and as such, the fans will be treated to an outstanding level and quality of play heading into the knockout rounds.”
The release further said, “The respective fans and communities have descended on the venue in their numbers and we are thankful for their unwavering support which has aided the event in being considered a phenomenon. Without their support alongside the backing of the players, the tournament would not be what it is today.”
The round-robin stage will last for three nights, with the remaining two nights scheduled for July 20th and 26th respectively.
The winner of the event will collect $500,000 and the championship trophy and seal an automatic place in the national championship.
The second, third and fourth place finishers will collect $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding trophy.
