Jamaican gets nine months for escape from custody

Anthony Lynch, a Jamaican national currently serving a one-year-sentence for sharing an obscene video, was yesterday sentenced to nine months in prison after admitting to escaping custody.

Lynch, 33, was sentenced after he changed his not guilty plea at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 2. The charge, which was first read to him by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in June of this year, stated that on January 7th, at Eve Leary, Georgetown, while being in lawful custody at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, he escaped.

Lynch is currently serving a one-year sentence after he pleaded guilty to a charge that on January 1st, 2019, at Lot 20 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he knowingly or without justification, exposed for public viewing, an obscene video, intending to corrupt public morals.

Prosecutor Sanj Singh had stated that Lynch shared the video with a number of persons on WhatsApp, including the victim’s relative. He had escaped from custody while being held for this crime.

In addition to those charges, Lynch is currently remanded for overstaying his time in Guyana. The charge states that between May 1st, 2017 and May 29th, 2019, in Georgetown, having been permitted to stay in Guyana from November 16th, 2016 to April 29th, 2017, he overstayed.
