MVP Sports located in the Giftland Mall is the latest entity to become a sponsor of the highly anticipated Jefford Track and Field Classic X scheduled for August 11 in Linden.
During an official ceremony yesterday at MVP Sports, its CEO, Ian Ramdeo presented a sponsorship pact to founder of the annual fixture, Edison Jefford.
The company has pledged to outfit the male and female champion athlete and reward them financially.
Those two athletes will receive $25,000 worth of Under Armor apparel and $25,000 in cash along with their respective trophies. Additionally, MVP Sports, along with Urban Life, will sponsor the male and female 400m events.
Ramdeo disclosed that yesterday was just the beginning of exposing local athletes to the various world renowned brands and earmarked these types of events as crucial in edifying the public about the durable products the company has available.
Jefford thanked Ramdeo for his show of benevolence and then highlighted that this year’s staging will be the best one yet.
According to Jefford, securing incentives for the athletes was a top priority of his and he is heartened by the support he has gotten to ensure that the athletes are rewarded properly after they compete at the meet in Linden.
He said that athletes will collect their incentives immediately at the prize giving ceremony after their respective events.
A total of $2 million will be awarded directly to the athletes for their efforts. Each event carries a total purse of $80,000 with the winner pocketing $40,000, second place $25,000 and third place $15,000.
Jefford, who disclosed that the meet will remain at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground until the synthetic facility is completed in Linden, added that most of the nation’s top athletes will be putting their talents on display.
“We expect to have the cream of the crop on show” said Jefford, whose father, Elton, in whose honour the meet is being held, was one of the country’s top sprinters.
He added “We plan to have a grand occasion, there are unique things that will be happening.”
Among them will be “10 big gate prizes and 10 popular entertainers to keep the fans entertained.”
Action gets underway at 09:00hrs and admission is listed at $1000 for adults and $500 for children.
