The Lethem branch of the GPF and the Rupununi Football Association (RFA) will today stage a five-a-side futsal tournament at the Tabatinga Sports Ground, Lethem.
The tournament, which has attracted both male and female teams, is being held in observance of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) 180th anniversary, a press release from the organisers stated.
Some 16 teams – five female and 11 male teams will compete in the tournament which gets underway from 1pm. The male teams include Moco Moco FC, Guyana Police Force (GPF), Rising Stars FC, Snatchers FC, Gladiators FC (A & B teams), Guyana Rush Saints FC, Terminators FC, Far East Sports Club, Potarinau Sky Kings FC and the Guyana Defence Force while the female teams are the Guyana Rush Saints, Gladiators FC, Far East United FC, Snatchers FC and Potarinau FC.
The one-day knockout tournament is part of a Day-of-Sports and will see the male teams placed in two groups, playing against each other to the final while the female teams will play straight knockout matches, the release added.
Moco Moco and the Guyana Police Force male teams will play the opening encounter followed by the Guyana Rush Saints FC vs Gladiators FC female encounter.
The tournament was launched at the Indigenous People Conference Hall last Friday where
representatives of the RFA and the GPF gave brief remarks.
Representing the RFA was President Rayan Farrias who emphasized how inspirational and brilliant the initiative is to Lethem and the Guyana Police Force. Subordinate Officer-In-Charge, Lethem and Sergeant 20113 Connell gave a brief overview of the activities to mark the 180th anniversary and emphasized that the rules of the various sports must be observed as discipline is the hallmark of the GPF. In giving the feature address, Superintendent King charged all participants and members to give of their best and reminded them that this initiative is not only because of the Force’s anniversary but serves as the GPF’s continued will and desire to have a much closer relationship with all communities.
