A pregnant woman is now free on $5,000 bail after she denied dousing a People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) supporter with dirty water during a protest last Friday.

Cassandra Amsterdam, 24, of 48 High and Barrack streets, Kingston, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Georgetown on an assault charge, stemming from the incident, which occurred during a PPP/C protest near the Guyana Elections Commission’s Kingston headquarters.

Amsterdam pleaded “guilty with explanation” to the charge, which stated that on July 19th, 2019, at Barrack and High streets, Kingston, Georgetown, she assaulted Yanalla Dalrymple.

Police prosecutor Adduni Inniss told the court that on the day in question, Dalrymple was part of a peaceful protest on behalf of the PPP/C. The court was told that Amsterdam, upon hearing the noise, exited her house and shouted at the protesters. When they would not be quiet, she armed herself with a bucket containing dirty water and threw it on several persons.

Amsterdam, however, told the court, “My child was sleeping and they were making unnecessary noise in front my house, so I throw a cup of water I had in my hand but the water did not touch anybody.”

After listening to both the prosecutor and Amsterdam, Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus entered a not guilty plea on Amsterdam’s behalf. No objections were made by Prosecutor Inniss and Amsterdam was released on $5,000 bail. The matter was adjourned until later this month.
