Police are expecting to lay charges against the three suspects in custody for the murder of Alvin Gajraj, who was fatally chopped in an attack at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo last Thursday.
Commander of ‘D’ Division Edmond Cooper yesterday told Stabroek News that investigators have completed the case file and sent it for legal advice.
During the course of the investigation, Cooper said, statements were taken from the suspects and they related what occurred on the night of the attack.
He explained that the men remain in police custody and are likely to make a court appearance today.
Gajraj, also known as ‘Chockoloo,’ 25, a fisherman of 820 ‘G’ Zeelugt North, East Bank Essequibo, was chopped to death, while his brother, Devendra ‘Shameer’ Seenarine, 17, who was in his company at the time remains hospitalised.
The commander added that an autopsy examination performed on Garaj gave his cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to multiple chop wounds.
Meera Gajraj, a sister of Alvin and Devendra, told Stabroek News that her brothers were on their way home from her house when they were attacked by three men. One of their assailants was armed with a cutlass, another with a crowbar and the other with a piece of wood, she related.
She explained that moments after her brothers left her residence, she heard a commotion on the road and went to enquire. “…I run out and I see one of them beating Devendra, who went in the drain and I watching on all the time and begging he to stop but he refuse to, so I run back home and tell me husband put me on the bicycle and carry me to let me go call some other relatives,” Meera recounted.
She added that Devendra fell into a trench during the attack, resulting in one of the men attacking him.
Meera said after she was unable to prevent the brothers’ assailants from attacking them, she went and called on her other relatives and returned to the scene.
When she returned with family members, she related they could not find Devendra. However, she was told that he was rushed to the hospital by another relative and was receiving treatment.
Not too long after, Meera said that she saw the three men walking casually through one of the streets, and one of them told her, “Go and see my buddy at the wall done dead.”
She became alarmed and rushed to the north of the village, where she searched for her brother. She only discovered him after she had quit searching and was returning home.
Meera said she found her brother’s motionless body in a pile of rock not too far from where her younger brother was attacked. “They mean to kill them and Shameer lucky he didn’t dead too,” she said.
Alvin’s body was picked up and rushed to the Leonora Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
