President of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Roger Harper delivered a rousing charge to five of the club’s juniors who were selected to represent Guyana at the 2019 Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional Under-19 Championship in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Harper delivered the remarks during a simple sending-off ceremony at the club’s pavilion on Wednesday evening.

Included in the squad are DCC members Ashmead Nedd – skipper of the side – Sachin Singh, Alphius Bookie, Daniel Mootoo and Qumar Torrington. They were reminded of the club’s rich history and were urged to use the opportunity to keep the DCC tradition alive.

“They say that here is the home of legends and indeed we are in the business of making legends and so we want to push you to achieve higher heights,” Harper impressed upon the youngsters. The former West Indies all-rounder challenged the young men to remain hungry for success and to use the championship, which runs from July 28 to August 6, to tap into the “tremendous opportunities” cricket has to offer. “While we enjoy giving you a good send-off, we want to be able to give you a big welcome home. We want you to come back with a bag full of performances, a bag full of runs and wickets. We just don’t want to say that we produced players who went on a trip.

“We want to be able to say that these guys have performed and they have put themselves in a position to get on a West Indies team, on the Guyana senior team. People must be talking about you because of your outstanding performances.”

Meanwhile, Gavin Nedd, coach of the club and an instrumental figure at the forefront of nurturing the talents of the fab-five, received kudos for his efforts. During his address to the five, Nedd encouraged them to remain focused, committed and to continue doing the little things that have brought them success. All five players were given monetary packages. The quintet advanced through the age-group cricket at the club and were members of the highly successful DCC summer camp.
