A five-wicket haul from fast bowler Matthew Forde spurred Barbados to a three-wicket victory over Guyana in the second round of the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 tournament at Arnos Vale, St Vincent and the Grenadines yesterday.
After being inserted to bat, the defending champions folded for 124 in 30.1 overs while Barbados reached 126-7 in 29.1 overs.
Guyana approached the seamers with caution in the first two overs but Forde would make the breakthrough, striking twice in the third over, firstly trapping Alex Algoo (05) leg before wicket before bowling Junior Sinclair two legal deliveries later. Kevlon Anderson (04) suffered the same fate as Algoo to leave Guyana reeling at 49-3 after 10 overs.
The innings continued to collapse further with Alphius Bookie (03), who was struck on the hand and received medical attention, caught, snatched at first slip by Forde diving to his right.
Sachin Singh, apart from being dropped on eight, looked comfortable but when a lifting delivery wide on the off-stump approached, he slashed only to edge into the gloves of the wicket-keeper for 28 from 38 balls. His innings featured three fours and one six.
Seon Glasgow was the only other batsman to reach double figures with an unbeaten 33 from 49 deliveries, laced with one four and two sixes.
Forde returned to strike with his second ball,
bowling Leon Swamy and ended the innings with the wicket of Kelvin Umroa to finish with 5-24.
Left-arm seamers Rashawn Worrell and Ramon Simmonds picked up two wickets each for 19 and 23 runs respectively.
Barbados’ innings began in a shaky manner with Worrell being dropped twice off of Qumar Torrington. Nevertheless, Swamy removed his opening partner Mekhail Marshall for seven and Demetrious Richards (05) to see Barbados off to lunch on 35-2.
However, Barbados’ innings was revived with an even half century from Rivaldo Clarke consisting of five boundaries before holding out to short long off. Antonio Morris chipped in with 28 and Worrell contributed 17.
Swamy finished with 2-20 while left-arm spinners, Kelvin Umroa (3-38) and Ashmead Nedd (2-20), were the other wicket-takers.
Guyana will now face Leeward Islands at Park Hill tomorrow.
