Guyana bounced back from a humiliating defeat to trounce the Leeward Islands by 119 runs in the third round of the Cricket West Indies “Rising Stars” Regional Under-19 tournament at Cumberland Ground yesterday while the Windward Islands and Barbados also secured wins.
The defending champions opted to bat first after winning the toss and lost their last seven wickets for 71 runs as they were bowled out for 176 in 49.1 overs. Leewards in reply, struggled to make any concrete performance with the bat and eventually crumbled for a disappointing 57 in 27.5 over.
Guyana’s batting centred around Sachin Singh who scored a disciplined 51 from 75 balls consisting of five fours and two sixes before he was caught by Akadianto Willett off of Elroy Francis.
After Singh lost his opening partner, Alex Algoo for four, he was joined by Junior Sinclair and the pair forged a 76-run stand which ended with Sinclair departing for 28 while Singh soon followed.
Kevlon Anderson picked up where Singh had left off with a composed 73-ball 42, decorated with three boundaries but while his skipper, Ashmead Nedd supported with 12, no other batsman reached double figures. Extras contributed 20.
Uri Smith ripped through the lower order and claimed 5-19 in 4.1 overs and was complemented by Francis who returned 3-21 from his 10 overs.
In reply, Smith returned to top score with 16 and along with Antonio Fernandes, 11, were the only two scorers over seven as Qumar Torrington and Anderson dismantled the feeble batting line up.
In the end, Torrington and Anderson finished with 3-18 while Nedd bagged 2-6. Singh and Leon Swamy also took one wicket each.
Meanwhile, Barbados maintained their lead at the top of the table with a five-wicket win over Jamaica at Arnos Vale. Barbados won the toss and elected to bowl.
