A fire, suspected to be electrical in origin, destroyed the one-storey wooden home of a Cliftom family yesterday morning.

Troy Elias, 32, of Lot 202 Clifton Settlement, Corentyne, explained that when the fire started sometime around 11.15 am, his wife was at home with their three children, who are ages three years, two years, and eight months old,.

According to the man, his wife said she saw electrical wires sparking in the house and rushed downstairs to call on neighbours for help.

A weeder reportedly rushed over and assisted in bringing out the children from the house, as in a matter of minutes the sparks had turned into flames.

According to residents, for the past few weeks the community has been experiencing frequent power outages.

They also vented their frustration with the fire service, saying that it showed up close to 45 minutes after being phoned. One neighbour noted that when the fire tender arrived, the entire house was already in engulfed flames and there was no chance of saving anything.

Elias estimated his losses to be over $1 million and he noted that it will be an extremely difficult challenge to start over.

According to the distraught man, he was renting the now destroyed home and was working on saving money to construct his own house after a friend had donated a house lot to him.
