An interim management committee (IMC) has been installed to manage the Blairmont Community Centre Cricket Club (BCCCC) until the next Annual General Meeting in January next year.
The BCCCC last held elections in 2018 but the body has not functioned since the start of 2019 following the resignation of past president, Shabeer Baksh.
The IMC was installed on Wednesday, with Mohamed Hussain, a Harvesting Manager at Blairmont Estate leading the body. Hussain served as the secretary of the centre’s council decades ago and has been a key member at the youth and first divisions. He also functions as president of the Blairmont Masjid and the Sapodilla Primary School’s Parent-Teacher Association.
Long-serving former president of the BCCCC, Baksh will provide support as his second-in-command while retired head-teacher Bibi Ishak (Secretary), Anil Sukra (Treasurer), Ameer Rahim (Assistant Secretary) and Omeshwari Prashad (Assistant Treasurer) have been appointed to the IMC along with the Blairmont Estate Community Development Officer, Adrian Singh, as the Public Relations Officer. Ramdatt Gobin, Shizad Ali, Govindaraj Khan, Jerry Karim, Rodesha Dookharan, Vejai Farhad, Selena Sibchand and Mohamed Samad will serve as council members.
According to Baksh, it was the declining state of the club and it’s abandonment by youths that led to this action.
In 2018, BCCCC had shown vast improvements, earning the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Club of the Year and the West Berbice Cricket Club/Team of the Year accolades at the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) awards ceremony.
BCCCC will host its cricket academy from August 12-25, from 2-5pm and will be seeking assistance from both the GCB and the BCB to provide the academy with experienced coaches. The academy aims to expose more youths to the intricacies of the game of cricket, besides keeping the club’s players active during the August break.
Located on the West Bank of Berbice in Region Five, the BCCC is, moreover, looking to regroup in all categories from the Under-13 level upwards. Interested individuals can contact the Academy Coordinator, Baksh on 628 6767.
The BCCC will also host a field trip for its players to the National Stadium, Providence for the first One Day International match between the West Indies and the Virat Kohli-led India team.
The body will meet today to discuss matters relating to the lifespan, elections and other administrative issues.
