Guyana’s table tennis whiz Chelsea Edghill was yesterday edged out of the ongoing Pan American Games in Lima, Peru in the round of 16 knockout stage.
The Guyanese went up against experienced foe in Colombian, Paula Medina. Medina took the first set 11-8 and narrowly captured the second 13-11.
Nonetheless, Edghill, who is one of Guyana’s brightest prospects, continued to display her combative pedigree against the Colombian but lost the final two sets by the slimmest of margins 9-11, -11-13 to surrender the knockout contest.
The 22-year-old, who is Guyana’s most recent National Sports Commission (NSC) senior Sportswoman-of-the-Year (2018), took to social media after the match to express her gratitude for the swirl of support given to her before the match.
“Tough loss today, not the result I was hoping for but the experience was great and the support of the Guyanese people was amazing.
“Thank you to the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) for affording me the opportunity to prepare for the games and their continued support to achieve greatness in the sport.
“Thank you to Tony Rato and Celeste Araujo for everything this last month. To Idi Lewis, thank you for today and all the years of coaching. Now we rest and prepare for the new season ahead,” Edghill said on Facebook.
Edghill was the lone Guyanese table tennis player to qualify for the games.
