Two weeks after a court found that a case was made out against Rickland Bovell, the cabbage farmer accused of fatally stabbing 18-year-old David Toney at the Timehri Docks in April, the defence reopened its case for a final witness.
When the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against Bovell resumed yesterday, Bovell’s attorney, who during the last court hearing called the defendant’s father and brother as witnesses and then closed the defence’s case, made a request to have the case reopened. The attorney informed the court that this request was to facilitate the defence calling the defendant’s mother, Ann Bovell, to testify.
This request was granted by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who is presiding over the PI.
Subsequent to the taking of Ann’s evidence, the defendant’s attorney then, once again, closed the defence’s case. She then requested a date to present closing submissions.
This request was granted and the matter was adjourned until later today.
The matter is being prosecuted by Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers.
The accused is alleged to have committed the crime during an altercation at the Timehri Docks over payment for loading produce onto a truck.
