Miner charged with theft of $2M Caterpillar part

A Matthews Ridge resident was placed on bail yesterday after he denied stealing a piece of mechanical equipment worth over $2 million in the North West District.

Anson Mendonca, of Heaven Hill, Matthews Ridge, appeared in a city court on the charge that between August 1st and August 2nd, he stole a Caterpillar Swing Gear, worth $2,272,586, which was the property of Joseph Gonsalves.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court the item was recovered at Charity in Mendonca’s possession. The parts were reportedly placed in fertilizer bags.

Mendonca, a miner, was granted his release on $150,000 bail and the case was adjourned until November 4th at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
