Police have arrested the mother of two teenage girls who alleged that she allowed men to engage in sexual activities with them, Director of the Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA), Ann Greene said.
The woman is presently in police custody while the girls who escaped from home are in state care.
Greene yesterday told Stabroek News, the girls have been receiving counselling and medical attention. She noted that the girls will be speaking with the police today.
“They came to us in a really bad shape. We had to get them into counselling and have them medically examined. They were badly neglected and we have been able to so far take care of the neglect part,” Greene said.
The girls on Thursday last ran away from home and went to the police and reported their story. As a result, the CCPA was contacted and the girls were placed in the agency’s care. Greene said her officers have been working around the clock to ensure the girls receive the care they require at this time.
Additionally, Greene said while it will be up to the police to charge the mother of the girls, it is an opening for the woman to receive the necessary help.
“With the police arresting her, It is the only way we can help a parent in these situations. Sometimes the stress and pressures of live are difficult to deal with and people are unable to maintain the balance between life and the stress. That leads to mental health problems. So in situations like these arresting them is the only way we can help them,” she stressed.
She added that the CCPA could only recommend charges but it will be up to the police to institute the charges and hold parents guilty of neglect accountable.
Investigations are continuing.
