Eagles FC overcame a late surge from Uitvlugt to win 3-2 when the West Demerara section of the National Milling Company [NAMILCO] U17 Football League commenced yesterday at the National Track and Field Center, Leonora.
Leading comfortably at 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining on the clock, Eagles would be given a scare as Uitvlugt initiated a comeback, bagging two goals in the space of 13 minutes to setup a tense ending.
The first came in the 70th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-1 when Shaquan Gilkes lashed home a powerful strike into the far corner to etch his name on the scorer’s sheet.
The deficit would be reduced further in the 83rd minute through Travis Fraser, who placed his effort into the back of the net from inside the area. The aforementioned conversion initiated panic within the Eagles unit.
This resulted in Romel Medas of Eagles being shown a red card in the 89th minute for a wild and reckless challenge, putting further pressure on his team’s backline due to a numerical handicap.
However, Eagles would hold on in the dying moments to seal the hard-fought result. Prior to the dramatic conclusion, Eagles broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute compliments of a Raynauth Nedd conversion.
This score would remain unchanged as the first half concluded. Upon the resumption, Telbert Baptiste got into the scoring act with a 49th minute effort in the right side to make it 2-0.
Eagles further extended their lead, as Jamali Kellman hammered past the opposing custodian in the 69th minute, setting up the contest’s eventual conclusion.
The event resumes tomorrow at the same venue with a solitary clash between Pouderoyen and Hurry-ATE at 16:00hrs.
The competition will also continue Friday at the same location with Den Amstel opposing Wales from 16:00hrs.
