Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo earlier this week presented instruments of appointment to the chairperson and directors of the reconstituted Board of Directors of the Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL), which is the publisher of the state-owned Guyana Chronicle newspaper.
A release from Nagamootoo’s office said the new Chairperson is Juretha Fernandes, while Terrence Moore, Amar Panday, Dawn Gardner, Ernestine Leonard and Ganesh Mahipaul were sworn in as board members. The other member, Nicola Trotman, was overseas at the time of the presentation ceremony.
Prime Minister Nagamootoo, the release noted, explained that there is much work to be done at the state-owned media to ensure that they operate not only as a viable business but fulfill its mandate to let the people know what the government is doing. The appointment of the GNNL’s new board of directors is effective from June 5, 2019.

Former board chairperson Geeta Chandan-Edmond tendered her resignation in June after Nagamootoo directed that the board rescind its decision to fire Sherod Duncan as Guyana Chronicle General Manager because of “procedural breaches.”
He accused Chandan-Edmond of unilaterally deciding to terminate Duncan’s services and misleading his office by claiming it was a decision of the board, while she tendered her resignation and maintained her position that a vote had been taken.
