Guyana are guaranteed at least bronze in the men’s doubles, mixed doubles, women’s singles and women’s doubles after they secured semi final spots in the 2019 CAREBACO junior badminton Championship on Friday at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium, St. Michael, Barbados.
In the opening match for Guyana, Priyanna Ramdhani and Tyrese Jeffrey teamed up to dispose of Jair Naipal and Chaista Soemodipoeri of Suriname in a three-setter of the mixed doubles.
Guyana marched into the semis after losing the first set 19-21 but returning to win the next two 21-18, 21-16. They will now battle Chequeda De Boulet and Vance Juiram.
In the men’s doubles, Jeffrey partnered with Akili Haynes to beat the Barbados pair of Sean Butcher-Nurse and Alexander Pearce-Greaves 21-10, 21-10. They will face the Barbados pair, Kennie King and Dominic Scantlebury in the semis.
However, Jeffrey failed to earn a semi-final spot in the men’s singles after losing to Trinidad and Tobago’s Leon Cassie 19-21, 21-18, 19-21.
Neverthess, his mixed doubles partner, Ramdhani continued her march with an easy victory over Barbados’ Robyn Sobers 21-6, 21-4. She will play Kayleigh Moenne in the semis.
The junior Sportswoman-of-the-Year then joined forces with Trinidad’s De Boulet to beat Surinamese duo, Faith Sariman and Moenne 21-14, 21-5. The pair will face Sobers and Makalia Reid for their spot in the final.
