Nabaclis clothes vendor murdered by husband

A 46-year-old clothes vendor was yesterday afternoon fatally stabbed by her husband following an argument and the man is now hospitalised in a critical condition after he subsequently tried to kill himself at the couple’s Nabaclis Sideline Dam, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home.

All eyes, as well as the cameras, will be on the burly Rahkeem Cornwall who will be making his debut today for the West Indies against traditional foes India.

MMA/ADA owed $1B by farmers

The Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary Agriculture Development Authority (MMA/ADA) has said that it is owed over $1 billion in fees by some farmers, who nonetheless continue to benefit from its services to them, including drainage works.

Grazing cattle a major nuisance at Continental Park

Dear Editor, I am a resident of Continental Park, Plantation Peter’s Hall on the East Bank of Demerara, who would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the residents of the area to vent through the letters column of your newspaper, the complete disgust and frustration of everyone residing there as it relates to the unlawful grazing of cattle in the neighbourhood.  When we purchased our properties in the Continental Park area, there were certain stipulated conditions on the agreement of sale that we are expected to maintain, like not being able to operate a mechanic shop there, not being able to rear livestock, and not being able to subdivide or sublet the properties to multiple families, etc; conditions, we understand, would be necessary to maintain a successful residential investment and which we strictly adhere to.  However, for more than two years now, there is an urban cattle rancher, who, incidentally, does not reside in the area, but who herds a huge kind of cattle into the area early each morning, and leaves them to graze in this residential neighbourhood until late at night.  In support of the country’s green agenda, most residents of the area have taken the time and expended their financial resources to landscape their properties including the front beyond their gates and fences.

Bids opened for Region 8 works

A lone bid has been received for the rehabilitation of roadways from Paramakatoi to Monkey Mountain, which is among five projects in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) for which bids were opened on Tuesday at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board, in Kingston, Georgetown.

Eagles, Amelia’s Ward Panthers through to semis

Eagles FC and Amelia’s Ward Panthers sealed their semi-final berths in the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) leg of the NAMILCO u17 championship yesterday at the Wisburg Secondary School ground.  Eagles FC overcame Hi-Stars 1-0 with Omar Duke finding the back of the net in the 63rd minute.

Hamley Case, has succeeded in getting the slave-era ‘Demerara Bell’ back to Guyana from Cambridge University after a lunchtime tete-a-tete with the Master of St Catharine’s College, Professor Sir Mark Welland, two weeks ago The bell came from plantation Anna Catherina, West Bank Demerara.
