Azerbaijan is offering scholarships at its leading universities as well as oil and gas training to Guyanese.
This was revealed yesterday by Dr. Elkhan Polukhov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan, during a courtesy call on Minister of State Dawn Hastings-Williams at the Ministry of the Presidency.
A statement from the ministry said during the meeting, Ambassador Polukhov informed that his visit was primarily to brief the minister on some of the opportunities in his country that are available to Guyanese.
“He noted that the Government of Azerbaijan is currently offering 40 scholarships at leading universities there at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and general medicine/ residency levels, as well as several research programmes at the doctoral level. “He indicated too that there are opportunities available to Guyanese for oil and gas training,” it said.
According to the statement, Minister Hastings-Williams welcomed the opportunities, while noting that they will help to boost President David Granger’s vision for an educated nation. “I must express my gratitude and that of the Government of Guyana for these opportunities. We will certainly look to take advantage of them because we want our people to go and study and train and come back to contribute and help to develop our country,” she was quoted as saying.
The statement said the minister also noted that Azerbaijan has a budding Wellness, Youth and Sport programme, from which she hopes Guyanese can also benefit.
It added that the two sides also discussed the celebration of the 25th anniversary since the establishment of bilateral ties, which will be commemorated next year.
