The Guyana Prison Service last night said prison wardens were forced to put out a fire that was set in the security block of the New Amsterdam Prison.
According to a statement issued by Director of Prison Gladwin Samuels, around 7.15 pm, committed prisoner Delon Butcher lit his mattress on fire.
No explanation was given as to the motive for the prisoner’s action.
Samuels said the prison officers on duty managed to put out the fire and an inspection was subsequently conducted by firefighters, who responded to the report of the fire.
Samuels explained that when prison officers responded, the prisoner was aggressive. As a result, Butcher sustained lacerations to his head and left eye. He was administered medical treatment and is in a stable condition.
Samuels commended the prison officers and members of the Joint Services for their quick response to the incident.
