Said to be well known to the police, Jamal David will be spending the next 18 months getting acquainted with the prison service and its inmate population after he admitted to stealing from a woman’s home, which he broke into while she was at church.
Appearing before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in Georgetown yesterday, David pleaded guilty to the charge that on Sunday, August 18th, at Lot 303 Church Street, he broke and entered the home of Ronell Franklin and stole $225,000, a $45,000 gym bag, five bottles of perfume valued at $50,000, a $30,000 watch, a pair of glasses valued $20,000, and jewellery valued a total of a total of $20,000.
Prosecutor Sanj Singh told the court that Franklin secured her home and went to church, leaving the articles mentioned in the charge intact. The complainant later returned to her home on the very date and discovered her front door was opened. Upon entering the home and making checks, she discovered the articles mentioned in the charge to be missing. She was with the help of her neighbours later able to view CCTV footage, which showed David entering her home and leaving with the bags.
David was arrested with the aid of public-spirited persons and later handed over to the police. The prosecutor noted that after David was told of the crime, he admitted to it.
The court also heard that David is well known to the police and was previously charged with similar crimes.
Having heard from the prosecutor, the magistrate sentenced the accused to 18 months in jail.
