Priyanna Ramdhani, the national female Under-19 has guaranteed Guyana it’s lone medal at the 2019 CAREBACO international senior tournament in Barbados after qualifying for the women’s doubles semifinal.
The junior CAREBACO triple gold medallist, partnered with Barbados’ Sabrina Scott to defeat Jamaica’s Alana Bailey and Katherine Wynter 21-16, 22-20 in the quarter final. They will face Barbados’ Monyata Riviera and Tamisha Williams in the semis.
Earlier, Priyanna and her brother, Narayan Ramdhani, lost to the number-one seed Howard Shu and Paula Lynn Obanana of the United States 21-13, 21-16 in the quarter final.
They had earlier defeated Cory Fanus and Riviera 21-12, 18-21, 21-14 in the mixed doubles category while Guyana’s Jonathan Mangra and partner Jamaica’s Wynter lost to Brazil’s Faricio Farias and Jaqueline Lima 21-9, 21-5 in the quarter final. The pair had defeated Dominick Scantlebury and Robyn Sobers 21-7, 21-6 in round one.
Mangra and Narayan Ramdhani lost in the quarter final to Timothy Lam of the United States and Antonio Li of Canada 21-11, 21-14 in the male doubles.
The Guyanese duo had defeated Shae Michael Marti and Gavin Robinson of Barbados.
Akili Haynes and Tyrese Jeffrey were disposed of in the first round 21-23, 22-20, 21-19 by Panama’s Francisco Hau Liu and Kyle Alexander Munoz Seixas.
The Guyanese contingent failed to make any significant strides in the singles division despite Priyanna Ramdhani beating Trinidad and Tobago’s Tishelle George 21-3, 21-1. She went on to lose to Mexico’s Haramara Gaitan 21-15, 21-13.
In the men’s classification, Haynes lost to Vinson Chiu of the United States, Narayan Ramdhani lost to Slovakia’s Milan Dratva, Mangra was defeated by Sam Parson of England and Jeffrey fell to Jamaica’s Samuel O’Brian Ricketts.
