A 20-year-old father of two was last Friday sentenced to six months in jail after he pleaded guilty to wounding a man.
Noel Seeratan, of East Ruimveldt, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding Devon Alphonso on July 8th at the East Ruimveldt Squatting Area.
Seeratan reportedly assaulted Alphonso’s brother, prompting Alphonso’s intervention. Seeratan had a knife, which he used to “chop” Alphonso several times along the left side of his body.
Alphonso was taken to a hospital and Seeratan was arrested. A medical report presented to the court stated that the chops caused 4 cm lacerations on the left side of Alphonso’s skull.
Seeratan was also charged with escaping police custody after he was in lawful custody for the unlawful wounding charge. He pleaded not guilty to that charge.
Police prosecutor Christopher Morris reminded the court that Seeratan seemed to show no remorse for the charge, while noting that the allegation against him was a very serious one. He suggested that the penalty should send a strong message to others that they cannot ignore the laws. Senior Magistrate Leron Daly agreed and she sentenced Seeratan to six months in prison and ordered that he undergoes anger management treatment while incarcerated.
Seeratan is expected to report to court on September 27th for report on the escape from lawful custody charge.
