Powerlifting standout, Vijai Rahim continues to add hardware to his cabinet.
The perennial medalist at local and international powerlifting events, returned to the local platform Sunday and chalked up another top-of-the-podium performance at the Raw National Championships staged at St Stanislaus College.
Rahim lifting in the 74kg class, showed his strength prowess without the assistance of lifting equipment, with a mammoth squat of 222.5 kg and a bench press of 127.5kg.
On his way to lifting the overall title with the leading IPF points, Rahim deadlifted a national record, easily pulling 302.5kg off the mat. His total of 652.5kg was also close to the national record for the class.
Following his exploits, Rahim who seems to improve every time he competes, stated that he has his sights set on international events next year following the National Senior Championships in December.
Meanwhile, female best lifter, Esther Maycock (84+kg) was also in sublime form. She had a great day on the platform with her lifts 135.0kg (squat), 70.0kg (bench press), 157.5kg (deadlift) and 362.5kg (total).
Maycock’s IPF points was tops amongst the four female competitors.
According to reports, Jeremy Indarjit (59kg) Romario Gonsalves (66kg), Hardat Tarson (83kg), Nigil Phillips (93kg), Ramzam Mohamed (120kg) and Jeremy Smith (120kg) also recorded national record breaking performances.
Note: In theory, “Raw” powerlifting means lifting with little to no additional equipment. In practice, “Raw” powerlifting means in competition, athletes are (generally) only allowed to use approved belts, an approved singlet, approved wrist wraps, approved knee sleeves, and chalk.
