Guyana’s top female badminton player Priyanna Ramdhani not only walked away with three gold medals and a bronze from the 2019 Caribbean Badminton (CAREBACO) tournament but also with a wealth of knowledge to improve her game.
The young talent told this publication, “I have learnt that you can’t win everything and more training needs to be put in place for me to improve and become better.”
Ramdhani, who participated in both the junior and senior Caribbean badminton tournaments added: “The competition was a bit tougher than last year because the opponents have improved quite a lot from the previous years but I managed to keep up and come out with three gold,” she said of her campaign in the junior division.
Reflecting on her performance she concluded….“being confident helps you to perform better on court because you need to be mentally and physically prepared.”
Of the senior tournament Ramdhani said that she gained a lot from the experience of playing with better players than herself.
“The tournament was a great experience for me playing among players of higher level and age.”
She plans to play in two major tournaments in November and January.
“I think I need to perfect some of my shots a bit more and develop my strength and stamina.”
Guyana won four gold and three bronze medals at the recent tournament in Barbados where the Junior Sportswoman-of-the-Year won gold in the under-19 singles and doubles as well as mixed doubles while settling for bronze in the senior women’s doubles.
The other medals came from Tyrese Jeffrey who partnered with Ramdhani to secure gold in the mixed doubles and bronze when he partnered with Akili Haynes in the men’s doubles.
The Guyana Badminton Association, in a release following the conclusion of the competition, said that it was extremely happy with the team’s performance and thanked all who assisted in making it a reality.
President of the Association and coach of the team, Gokaran Ramdhani explained “their performances were outstanding and shows their training methods were in order and our coaches, Narayan [Ramdhani] and I did a great job to guide them.”
He added, “She [Priyanna Ramdhani] played very strongly and aggressively and make her come out successful.”
