Venezuelan shoplifter sentenced to do community service

A Venezuelan woman was sentenced to do three weeks of community service yesterday after she pleaded guilty to shoplifting from a Bounty Supermarket.

Oliamith Gonsalves, 27, appeared in the courtroom of Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in Georgetown, where she was faced with the charge that on August 24th, at Bounty Supermarket, she stole two sticks of deodorant, two razors, Bounty beef cuts, and chicken feet, all valued at a total of $5,490.

Gonsalves admitted to the charge and apologised to the court.

According to Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh, Gonsalves was approached by security guards at the supermarket after she was noticed acting in a suspicious manner. They asked to carry out a search and it was then that they found the items hidden in her possession. Police were called and Gonsalves was arrested.

Gonsalves was ordered to perform three weeks of community service or serve a two-week prison sentence as an alternative. “I am willing to do community service,” an emotional Gonsalves told the magistrate.
