The unassuming stature of Junior National Table Tennis player, Colin Wong, came to prominence as he captured Guyana’s lone singles medal in the 2019 Caribbean Mini and Pre Cadet Table Tennis Championships which concluded in the Dominican Republic.
Wong secured bronze in the 13-years and-under singles event. He was stopped in the semifinal by Rafael Cabrera 1-3 to claim his joint third podium finish.
Earlier in the day he defeated Trinidadian Samuel Humphrey 3-1 to land his spot in the semis.
The young man emerged out of Group Seven unbeaten after defeating Acevedo Andelson 11-6, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5 of the Dominican Republic and Trinidadian, Ali Sameer 11-8, 11-7, 11-6.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Van Lange was the only other Guyanese player in the 13-year and under category to advance past the first round before he was defeated.
Van Lange, who finished second in Group Three to advance past the group stage, suffered a tough 3-2 lost to Dominican Republic Eduardo Arryl in a thrilling five setter to end his campaign.
Guyana’s Ebo McNeil, who hails from Region 10 Linden, lost in his quarter-final match to number one seed Enrique Rios by a 3-0 margin to bring the curtains down to a very promising debutant event.
