President of the Guyana Chess Federation, Frankie Farley along with Fide Master, Anthony Drayton made strides at the recent Inaugural FIDE Americas Caribbean Cup held at the Divi Southwinds Beach Resort, Barbados.
The competition, which was won by international Master, Orlando Husbands of the host country, saw the GCF President finishing in the top 15 after ranking 24.
Farley was the only player below 1700 rating points (1410 rating points) to crack the top 15.
He ended with 3.5 points.
Farley said that he only participated because the event was hosted at the same venue as a Continental conference which he attended as GCF President.
He added that it was an eye-opening event and was really exciting to be a part of while rating the performance of the local players as encouraging.
National Champion, Drayton, rated 2027 was ranked ninth at the start but finished 21st with three points including a victory over Farley in round three. Drayton suffered four losses, two of which came from Fide Masters, Ryan Harper and Kevin Cupid of Trinidad and Tobago.
Junior champion, Ethan Lee, who was the lowest rated player in the tournament with 1109, secured two draws and two wins against players who were rated 300 points or more above him. He also had three losses.
Thirteen-year-old, Ronan Lee, the youngest of the Guyanese quartet and the only unrated player managed to secure a win by defeating Barbados’ T. Melvin to finish on two points and 30th out of 33 players.
The Barbados Chess Federation cancelled rounds six and seven after a national shutdown was issued due to Tropical Storm Dorian approaching the island.
