After being without electricity for almost two weeks, the township of Mabaruma has seen power partially restored and the community awaits the restoration of full power when the main 750 kVA generator is repaired.
Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley yesterday told Stabroek News that the small generator was repaired two days ago and residents have since been receiving electricity at intervals. He indicated that there has been no communication between him and the Regional Executive Officer Randolph Storm on when the 750 kVA generator will be repaired.
Ashley explained that some communities receive electricity from 5 to 8 pm, while another set receives from 8 to 11 pm, a system that was used previously.
Mabaruma was without power for over a week after the generators failed. The generators required maintenance but that was never executed since the Regional Executive Officer didn’t sign off on the works proposal, Ashley had previously said.
He had complained about the non-functioning $200 million solar farm in the region. He opined that if energy was being collected from the farm, the disruptions would be a thing of the past.
He argued that despite the farm being completed, there are several issues that need to be rectified. “It is looking like a waste of money because it is not functioning. There is no storage capacity for a long period, a transformer is reportedly damaged and they have been reluctant to fix it. I don’t know what is happening with that project,” he said.
Meanwhile, regarding the power outage at Santa Rosa Mission in the Moruca sub-region of the North West District, Ashley said that power has been completely restored to that area. The community was hit with a power outage due to a power line that burst when some residents were cutting a tree at Santa Rosa two weeks ago.
